Calistoga Historic AtmosphereDiscovered more than 500 years ago, the volcanic hot springs were prized by the Wappo Indians. During the 1840s, settlers began to arrive in Calistoga, drawn by word of the healing power of the springs. In the mid 1800s, a resort was built by Sam Brannan to take advantage of the hot springs and rival Saratoga Springs, NY, playground of the wealthy in upstate New York. Brannan was instrumental in bringing the railroad to the upper Napa Valley, as eventually daily trips became common between San Francisco and Calistoga. The Gold Rush had created wealthy citizens who traveled to Calistoga for relaxation.

A nine hole public golf course, the Mount Saint Helena GolfCalistoga Recreation Course, is located at the Napa County Fairgrounds, in Calistoga. Among the nearby parks are Pioneer Park, Bothe-Napa Valley State Park, Bale Grist Mill State Park and MacEdonian Park. Bothe-Valley State Park offers swimming, hiking, picnicking, camping and more. Towering redwoods make hiking scenic; this is a wonderful place to relax under the Douglas Fir trees and enjoy the natural beauty.
