Rutherford, CA Real Estate And Community Information
Welcome to Rutherford, California
Rutherford HistoryIn the late 1700s, Spanish explorers founded a group of Mishewal-Wappo Indians living in an area in the soon-to-be-known, Napa Valley of Northern California. The Mexican government quickly established land grants to encourage settlement in the underdeveloped territories, which resulted in Rancho Caymus, a 12,000 acre land grant that included what is known today as Yountville, Oakville and Rutherford California.
In 1830, Mexican governor Nicolas Gutierrez, gave Rancho Caymus to a European trapper named George Calvert Yount. He was the first person to settle in California’s Napa Valley, and Yount soon became friends with Mexican general Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo, who persuaded Gutierrez to deed Rancho Caymus to his friend.
Yount’s granddaughter, Elizabeth, married an affluent wine producer named Thomas Rutherford. On Elizabeth’s wedding day, Yount gave his granddaughter and her new husband 1,100 acres of Rancho Caymus, which Rutherford used to establish a world-class winery that still stands today.
Thomas Rutherford took advantage of the region’s Bordeaux-like landscape, and he created Napa Valley’s first vineyard. Other farmers soon followed suit, and in 1872, local wine producers founded the City of Rutherford, which is known today for its traditional red Bordeaux-type wines.
